Support
Ridgeway is offline topo navigation for hikers and trail runners, on iPhone and Apple Watch. These answers cover the questions people ask most.
Email support@enalmar.uk.
Say which iPhone or Apple Watch you have, which version of iOS or watchOS it runs, and what you expected to happen. A diagnostics file helps too: see Reporting a problem.
Maps
How do I get maps for a walk with no signal?
Open Offline Maps, then Download Area, and choose the tiles you want, or open a route and choose Download Maps for Route. An offline map shows Ready offline only once every tile has been checked.
Why is an area “too large to download in one go”?
Ridgeway’s maps come from OpenFreeMap, a free service. Its terms allow up to 3,000 tiles or 50 MB per download. Choose a smaller area, or download a large area in several parts.
My download is waiting.
When Download over Cellular is off (Settings › Downloads), downloads wait for Wi-Fi. Downloads carry on in the background, and a download stopped by the system resumes the next time you open Ridgeway.
Can I use Ridgeway with no network at all?
Yes. Turn on Use Only Offline Maps (Settings › Map). Areas you have not downloaded appear hatched.
Routes
Does Ridgeway plan routes that follow paths?
Not in version 1. The planner draws straight lines between the points you tap, with distance, ascent and time from the terrain. To follow a path exactly, import a GPX file from another app or website: tap Import GPX… in the planner, the Library or the Plan menu.
Navigation and alerts
I don’t get alerts when my iPhone is locked.
Check Settings › Lock Screen: Alerts on Lock Screen, Off Route and Turns and Arrival. Then check iOS Settings › Notifications › Ridgeway: notifications must be allowed. Ridgeway asks the first time you start an activity with a route. Alerts appear only while Ridgeway is in the background or the screen is locked; in the app the banner and the haptic show them.
Can I try navigation at home?
Yes: Settings › Try a Demo replays a route with simulated GPS. A Demo is never saved to Health.
Apple Watch
The watch doesn’t show my route.
Routes go to the watch when Send New Routes Automatically is on (Settings › Apple Watch), or from a route’s Send to Watch. With Include Maps with Routes on, the offline map that covers the route goes too.
Ridgeway Plus
What does Ridgeway Plus add, and how do I restore it?
Ridgeway Plus is a one-time purchase, shared with your family. It adds your Apple Health history and world map, the Hiking Pro and Tactical map styles, and Race Day. Navigation, offline maps, recording and safety alerts are always free. To restore it on a new device, open Settings › Ridgeway Plus › Restore Purchases.
Privacy
Ridgeway has no account and the developer collects no data. See Settings › About › Privacy, or the privacy policy.
Reporting a problem
