Privacy Policy
Ridgeway is an offline map and navigation app for hikers and trail runners. It has no account, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking. The developer collects no data about you. There is no Ridgeway server.
This policy matches what the app does. The same facts are in the app at Settings › About › Privacy, which works offline.
- 1. What stays on your devices
- 2. Apple Health
- 3. Location and motion
- 4. Network requests
- 5. Notifications
- 6. Diagnostics

1. What stays on your devices
Ridgeway stores these on your iPhone and Apple Watch, in the app’s own storage:
- the routes you plan or import, and the activities you record;
- waypoints, offline maps, map style choices and settings;
- the history Ridgeway reads from Apple Health, if you allow it (section 2).
Your iPhone and Apple Watch exchange routes, activities, offline maps and settings directly, using Apple’s WatchConnectivity. Nothing passes through a Ridgeway server.
Offline maps, map caches and the Apple Health history are excluded from iCloud and device backups. Your own routes and activities are part of your device backup, like any app’s documents; you control that backup in iOS Settings.
You can delete any route, activity or offline map in the app. Deleting the app deletes everything it stored.
2. Apple Health
- Saving. When Save to Health is on (Settings › Recording), each hike or run you finish is saved to the Health app as a workout with its route, distance and ascent. A Demo is never saved.
- Heart rate. During an activity Ridgeway reads your heart rate from Health to show it.
- History (Ridgeway Plus). If you choose to import your history, Ridgeway reads your hiking, walking and trail-running workouts and their routes to show totals, highlights and a map of where you have been. Road runs are not imported.
Health data that Ridgeway reads stays on your iPhone, is excluded from iCloud and device backups, and is never shared, sold, or used for advertising or marketing. Ridgeway never writes Health data to iCloud Drive or any other cloud store. You can remove imported workouts at Settings › Apple Health › Remove Imported Workouts; they stay in the Health app.
You can change Ridgeway’s Health permissions at any time in the Health app or iOS Settings.
3. Location and motion
Your location shows you on the map and records and guides your activities. With your permission it keeps doing so while the screen is off during an activity. The barometer measures ascent. Location and motion data are used on your devices only and are never sent anywhere.
4. Network requests
Ridgeway works without a connection. When you are online it makes only these requests:
| What | Who serves it | What they can see |
|---|---|---|
| Map tiles for the area you view or download | OpenFreeMap (openfreemap.org), served through Cloudflare | which map tiles are requested (so roughly which area you are looking at), your IP address, and the app’s name and version in the User-Agent |
| Terrain (elevation) tiles | Terrain Tiles on Amazon Web Services (s3.amazonaws.com) | the same, for terrain tiles |
| The current OpenFreeMap map version | OpenFreeMap | your IP address |
| The world map in the You tab (Ridgeway Plus) | Apple MapKit | what Apple’s Maps privacy policy describes |
| The Ridgeway Plus purchase | the App Store | what Apple’s App Store privacy policy describes; Ridgeway only learns whether Plus is unlocked |
These services have their own privacy policies. Ridgeway sends them nothing about you beyond what any app or website sends when it asks for a file.
Use Only Offline Maps (Settings › Map) stops every map and terrain request; the app then uses only the maps on your device.
There is no routing server in version 1: the planner draws straight lines between your points on the device, and routes that follow paths come from GPX files you import.
5. Notifications
If you allow notifications, Ridgeway shows navigation alerts (off route, turns, arrival, cutoffs and a low battery) on the Lock Screen during an activity. They are created on your iPhone; Ridgeway does not use push notifications or any notification server.
6. Diagnostics
Your iPhone keeps a log of Ridgeway’s crash and performance reports from Apple’s MetricKit (Settings › About › Send Diagnostics). It contains performance data and call stacks only: no location, routes, activities or Health data. It leaves your iPhone only if you choose Send Diagnostics and send it yourself, by email or another app.
Apple may also share crash reports with the developer if you have turned on Share With App Developers in iOS Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements. That is Apple’s setting and Apple’s data.
7. Children
Ridgeway is not directed at children under 13 and collects no data from anyone.
8. Changes
If a later version changes anything here, this policy is updated before that version is released, with a new “Last updated” date.
